Since a* is a sequence of zero or more a, and b* is a sequence of zero or more b, a*b* contains both a and b. So (a*b*)* is all the string over {a,b} Same for the second expression.

what is the language of this regular expression (a*b*)* and this ((a*b*)*(a*b*)*)*, and why? does it imply that the inner stars can be "switched" on different runs of the outer star?
